Newborn care at the Epworth Geelong Hospital

Maternity Services at Epworth Geelong Hospital have delivered more than 750 babies since opening in August 2017. Geelong Children's Clinic paediatricians work with the Epworth team of obstetricians and midwives, providing safe and nurturing care for newborn infants and their parents. We will be delighted to care for your newborn and support your family through this special time.

If your baby is born at Epworth Geelong Hospital, you may meet one of the Geelong Children's Clinic paediatricians either at the birth or in the first few days on the Postnatal Ward.

Sometimes newborn babies need admission to the Special Care Nursery for more intensive monitoring and medical support. This is more likely if your baby is born prematurely (before 37 weeks' gestation), if your baby requires IV fluids to maintain safe blood sugar levels, or if your baby develops breathing difficulties.

If your baby is diagnosed with a complex medical condition during the pregnancy, your obstetrician may recommend that you meet with one of our paediatricians prior to the birth, and perhaps you might like to take a tour of the Special Care Nursery onsite.
